Contouring is one of beauty’s most popular trends, but also the trickiest.
Back when I was firstly starting to learn how to do makeup properly, I was too scared of walking out with my contour-attempt; I would just blend everything out until it wasn’t visible anymore. Some time later, when I finally mastered the art, I just couldn’t get enough of it!
There are loads of contour palettes on the market right now, but today we are going to only compare two of them: NYX’s “Highlight & Contour Pro Palette” and Revolution’s Beauty “HD Pro Powder Contour”. Is the latter a dupe for the first one?
Let’s find out!
Even if NYX parent company is “L’Oréal”, all their products remain cruelty-free (much like RB), and the two items share the following ingredients:
Find the full lists of ingredients on revolutionbeauty.com and nyxcosmetics.com.
It would be kind of pointless to insert swatches for the NYX palette since it’s customizable, so I will only insert ones for RB’s palette.
Now, let’s take a step back and examine the two palettes: are they actually similar?
Well, yes and no.
Since we only get net weights and not the actual pan weight for both, we can’t really tell which one’s got more product. NYX’s palette is heavier, but cannot be certain whether that’s just packaging or actual weight of the powders.
I dare to say that the biggest advantage of NYX’s product is the fact that it’s completely customizable. Getting to pick your own shades is a fool-proof method to get your contour/highlight on point, that’s for sure. On the other hand, I believe its biggest downfall to be the lack of a proper setting powder.
Revolution’s palette has a fairly good choice of contours (3) and setting powders (also 3), but lacks variety in choosing a bronzer and highlight, offering one shade per each. When it comes to pigmentation, softness and blendability, however, there’s nothing to complain about!
I would say that both palette are a good choice travel-wise. NYX offers a nice variety when it comes to highlighters to better suit your mood, while Revolution has got you covered when it comes to face makeup in general. 4 contour shades also come in handy if you end up tanning a bit more, on NYX behalf.
Now, the moment of truth: which palette do I recommend? I would say both, in all honesty.
The price point isn’t as different as we’ve seen in some previous “Dupe Alert” posts, and I do believe both products to be worth their money.
Want to get to know both companies a bit better?
When it comes to NYX, I have a lot of “Dupe Alert” posts ready for you! You can find one about Jeffree Star’s “Gemini” and NYX’s “Exotic” here, but if you love Kylie Cosmetics there’s a way better selection. Here you’ll find a dupe for “Koko K”, while here one for “Exposed”. Lastly, you can check this one for Kat Von D’s “Bow n Arrow”. Did I mention they’re all 7$?
Revolution Beauty also produces amazing quality products, but their dupes are more centered towards eyeshadow palettes. You can find a 7$ dupe for Urban Decay’s Naked Heat here, and another 7$ dupe for ABH’s Subculture here. If you’re more into pinks and golds, I then recommend checking these two dupes for ABH’s Modern Renaissance and this one for Huda Beauty’s Rose Gold palette.
If you don’t really care about dupes and just want some good, old-fashioned reviews, I am happy to comply! You’ll find Revolution’s collab with BritishBeautyBlogger here, and the first one they did with SophDoesNails here. Take a look at their “Life On The Dance Floor – VIP” palette here, also!
