e.l.f. Cosmetics is somewhat of a gem when it comes to drugstore makeup, and has proven to be an actually valid choice when it comes to cheaper cosmetics.
I was only able to get my hands on a few of their products last year, and I must say they really positively surprised me.
I genuinely wasn’t expecting that quality at that little price!
In total, I was able to try out their Poreless Putty Primer, a handful of their mini eyeshadow palettes and a few of their lipsticks.
As you may have guessed from the title, today we are going to dive deep into these last ones!
The Sheer Slick Lipsticks are kind of a new addition to the e.l.f. Cosmetics product range, and they are something new to the makeup scene as well.
This formula is incredibly unique and colorful, and it will probably become a must for this Spring and Summer.
It is lightweight and provides quite a soft wash of color that can be built-up to a stronger finish. Also, the colors are generally quite fun and bright.
For this review, I am going to talk about the shades ‘Grapefruit‘ and ‘Cherry Slush‘. These premises are fairly simple, but are these lipsticks actually that good?
It’s time to find out!

In general, e.l.f. keeps it simple when it comes to packaging. The Sheer Slick lipsticks are no exception, of course.
The formula comes in a brightly colored tube, the hue being the same one of the lipsticks you have chosen.
In fact, as you can see from the pictures, ‘Grapefruit‘ is in a pink tube while ‘Cherry Slush‘ is in a more reddish one.
You can find all of the general informations about the product printed all over the tube, and I love that they chose a white color for this.
It pairs perfectly with the color of the packaging, strengthening the whole Summer and Spring vibe. Moreover, it makes everything easier to read.
The cap doesn’t come off too easily, which is great if you plan to travel with it or put it in your bag to carry around throughout the day. On the other hand, the see-through element may not appeal to everybody.
It doesn’t bother me at all, but I recognize packaging does play an important role when it comes to makeup.
As basically any other makeup product, the Sheer Slick lipsticks come with a few claims.
They aren’t necessarily bold and extra ones, but I figured it would be great to examine them one by one and talk about my experience wearing the formula.
Yes, most definitely. This formulation is a true pleasure to wear, and looks quite good on the lips as well. It goes on incredibly smoothly, and looks hydrating and, of course, silky once applied.
Once again, I have to admit that this is definitely a true claim. Because this formulation is so soft and silky, it will literally melt on your lips to create an incredibly comfortable wearing experience. It is so nice to have it on, it gets to a point you can almost forget you’re wearing lipstick at all!
If the name Sheer Slick wasn’t revealing enough, here we have the proper description of this formula! These lipsticks aren’t really highly pigmented, but the brightness of their hues can make them look so. You won’t look like you have nothing on your lips even with just one swipe, but it surely won’t look like a proper satin lipstick.
Like we have mentioned all throughout this review so far, this formulation is hydrating. Highly hydrating! It reminds me quite a bit of a Vaseline-based lip balm, and I have to admit I am not mad at it.
We have briefly addressed the claims of the Sheer Slick lipsticks, but let’s actually analyze their performance a bit more in depth.
Something I quite enjoyed about this formulation is the fact that it is completely fragrance-free. I definitely appreciated this little touch, and I believe it makes the product better suited for everybody. It’s one less thing to worry about!
I feel like we could sit here and talk about this product’s coverage, and we wouldn’t really get anywhere. It is so different and unique compared to everything I have tried before!
One swipe won’t grant you the same coverage a satin lipstick would, that’s for sure, but because the hue is so bright it will look like a lot. Of course, it isn’t a proper neon effect, but rather something that could be classified as a little more than a wash of color.
The best thing about this formula is that it allows you to build up the finish, so you can actually regulate the amount that goes on the lips. Building up a proper coverage is rather easy, although the effect is kind of a bright and almost neon one.
Because of its hydrating formulation and its glossy finish, the Sheer Slick lipsticks do not last very long.
Truthfully, e.l.f. never really branded them as long-lasting in the first place, so no surprise here.
The interesting thing about this formula is that the finish actually resembles a gloss. It creates the same glass-like texture on the mouth, and is overall quite comfortable to wear.
I decided to provide two different demos for the same color. The first one, the one above in this case, will just showcase how the shade looks after just one swipe. The second one on the other hand, will show how the color looks once it is layered multiple times.
And here is how ‘Grapefruit’ looks on the lips once layered on. You can still see the glossy effect a little bit, and you can also see how bright the pigment can turn out to be.
As you can see from this one-swipe demo, ‘Cherry Slush’ looks quite pink and bright once applied on the lips. Also, compared to ‘Grapefruit’, I feel like it looks a little more glossy.
Lastly, here is how ‘Cherry Slush’ looks once layered on the lips.
Now, it does look quite pink on camera – to be fair, the pink element is incredibly strong in this lipstick, I am not going to lie. However, it does have a slight warm vibe to it as well.
It isn’t quite visible on camera, which is quite a shame. I tried re-taking the picture, but this was the best I could come up with. You can kind of see it, though.
Here we are at last!
In conclusion, would I recommend the Sheer Slick Lipsticks by e.l.f. cosmetics? I would!
I think that these lipsticks are definitely a breath of fresh air considering all the lip formulas we’re used to, and will be perfect for your spring and summer looks.
Now, you have to consider we are literally talking about a gloss in a stick formulation. You won’t get excellent payoff and a long-lasting experience, you have to keep that in mind.
These lipsticks were created to be hydrating and look pretty for a little while when they’re sitting on your lips. The first meal you have will take them out immediately.
Another thing to keep in mind if you’re considering buying the Sheer Slick Lipsticks is that the colors are bright. I am talking bright bright.
If you want something more conservative and toned-down, you’re not going to have a great time with them. On the other hand, if an almost neon finish is what you’re looking for, go right ahead!
What I feel like would benefit these products are more color options.
You see, while I was browsing e.l.f. website and trying to decide if I really wanted to give them a shot, they all seemed the same to me. The swatches didn’t help me all that much, because the colors were too similar for me. ‘You could have just went to the store!’ you may argue, but unfortunately e.l.f. isn’t sold in stores in my country (I hope it will soon!).
It would be incredibly interesting to see how darker or simply different shades turn out in this formulation, and I do believe this shade range would really benefit from that.
Other than this little ”issue”, I had a wonderful time using the Sheer Slick Lipsticks by e.l.f., and I would actually consider re-purchasing if new shades will be added to the collection.
