For this chapter of The Fashion Journal, we are going to analyze – once again – an Academia subgenre; Darkest Academia.
I stumbled upon this aesthetic on Pinterest a little while back, and immediately felt drawn to it. It is quite similar to Dark Academia, as you probably have already guessed, but with a little twist – which you have probably guessed, too. Needless to say, if you happen to like black or quite dark hues in general, you’re going to love this aesthetic!
In general, Darkest Academia is the (almost) identical twin of Dark Academia; you can check out the chapter I dedicated to that aesthetic right here.
In truth, it is incredibly easy to mix the two together. The only element that gives away Dark Academia is that it can have rare and far-in-between pops of color – like green, orange and blue, most commonly. Although Darkest Academia does include hues different than black, they still are on the dull and gloomy side. The only exception, as always, is the inclusion of white.
Now that we have got a few of the basic points out of the way, allow me to explain how we’re going to navigate through this chapter.
The whole post is divided into 4 parts; The Items, The Outfits, The Colors and, lastly, 10 Key Items You Should Own. They’re all pretty self-explanatory, but I promise we’ll go deep into detail with each one.
So, are you finally ready to find out how you can copy Darkest Academia aesthetics and outfits?
Let’s get started!
Even more than Dark Academia, this trend mainly focuses on colors, rather than the actual items; the hues are the ones that take center stage, rather than the actual pieces of clothing.
Speaking in general terms, Darkest Academia has a classier and more elegant vibe to it – although it can be almost imperceptible at times.
There are a lot of turtlenecks and dress pants, and this also happens to be one of the most popular pairings of this aesthetic.
Skirts and dress are also pretty popular, and the pairings can vary quite a bit; the best advice I have for you is to pick something that works for every season – and something that you like!
We have already discussed of a popular pairing before, that one being a turtleneck + a pair of dress pants; similarly, a turtleneck and a skirt will work quite well together, too.
In general, and just like we saw with both Dark and Light Academia, the balance between baggy and fitted is quite good. A looser-fitting item is almost always paired with a tighter one, which creates a nice and elegant contrast.
There are loose and baggy outfits that make up the Darkest Academia aeshtetics, but it is never a ‘dramatic’, too oversized situation.
When it comes to layering, cardigans and sweaters are more favorable than coats or jackets; blazers are quite popular as well, since they keep the elegant vibe we have talked about before going.
If you’re looking for ideas when it comes to shades, take Dark Academia colors and darken them. Make them as dark as possible, while still maintaining some of the original hue. Imagine taking your favorite color (other than black, of course), and darken it to the max – that’s what you would ideally go for.
Needless to say, the star shade here is black; total black looks are quite popular here. Of course, you can mix and match other hues, but you have to remember that black will always be very present here – so if that’s not your jam, I would advise you to stay away from Darkest Academia!
As opposed to Dark Academia, the pops of color here are almost completely non-existent. In fact, the most notorious one – and the only real one here – is white. Whether it comes in patters or designs, pure white can blend perfectly into any Darkest Academia outfit.
When it comes to patterns and designs, these are quite toned down and far-in-between. They are generally dark in nature, and the most popular are checkered ones.
Although minimalistic designs can appear in this aesthetic, solid colors are the top choices.
You certainly don’t need to stick to this list; these are just basic items that will allow you to create a multitude of looks without breaking the bank. I would especially encourage you to experiment with different colors; the shades I provided in this list are mere examples, but feel free to pick whichever hues you feel most comfortable wearing!
