They are an incredibly valuable tool for makeup artist and people who want to practice doing makeup in general, and they are one of the best ways to express your creativity.
I firstly came across Face Charts on Facebook around May or June, and I immediately fell in love with it.
The product I firstly saw was the Face Chart book by Liza Kondrevich; it is a big volume full of helpful informations and knowledge about charts and makeup in general. I reviewed it a little while back, and I would definitely recommend checking it out before proceeding with this post.
Also, I am still so incredibly grateful for Liza reposting my review; it really meant the world to me!
Face templates are essential to create your own charts of course, and Liza decided to help us out with that!
Around Black Friday, she dropped a total of 2 template workbooks which are also sold in bundles. At the time, I took advantage of the sales and purchased two of each.
So, after this lengthy introduction it’s time for the million dollar question: are these Face Chart Template Workbooks actually worth it?
Let’s find out!
Like we said before, you will find two different workbooks on the website. One has all frontal views, and the other only side views. Each book has four different subjects.
A single workbook retails for 20€, but there are many different bundles available; in fact, if you really wanted both of them I would encourage you to take advantage of bundles to save some money!
Anywho, I really wanted to talk about the outer look of these workbooks. I feel like this part was well thought out despite being kind of irrelevant when it comes to this product, so let’s address it.
What I particularly appreciate about the look of these Face Chart Template Workbooks are the infos on the front. You really get to know everything about this product right away just by glancing down, which is something I deeply appreciate.
The papers inside measure 30.5 x 24 cm, which is kind of big. It’s approximately 12 x 9.4 inches. Also, we learn that we are using fine art paper – we are going to talk about this more in-depth later, don’t worry.
A detail I was also able to enjoy about this front page was the QR Code at the very bottom;. I know it may be an insignificant addition, but I actually think it is a professional and efficient feature to be added.
The back of the workbook is something I thoroughly enjoyed, and I am sure everybody else did as well. In fact, we have a piece of Liza’s artwork there!
We don’t have a full picture unfortunately, but I do see how it is placed in an artistic way. We also have the writings ‘Makeup is my art’ on the top part.
All in all, I must say I did really like this aesthetic; I find it to be quite professional, and that is incredibly great if you were planning on using the Face Chart Template Workbooks as displays for your professional looks.
We briefly mentioned the size of the books earlier, but let’s dive a little deeper into this topic.
Before working on the workbooks, I used to print out face charts in different sizes, from small to full-page. Needless to say, the smaller sizes didn’t really work all that well for me.
For a properly done Face Chart, you need a big size to work comfortably. The size provided by these workbooks is optimal for you to use, and you don’t even have to print out more since you have a total of 48 sheets!
This size is also quite good to showcase your work and really have it take center stage.
One thing I absolutely want to praise about the Face Chart Template Workbooks is the variety of ethnicity and facial traits portrayed.
In both workbooks we have different faces we can work with, which is ideal if you want to work as a makeup artist. You’re going to have to work with different complexions and traits, and these books will help you practice that.
However, I feel like we can all agree that representation is important in general. I really appreciate Liza Kondrevich’s approach here, for sure!
In all honesty, I do recommend the Face Chart book. I think that it is packed with knowledge and useful informations, and is also a great way to spark your creativity when it comes to makeup looks.
However, if you have this whole charting business figured out and don’t feel like purchasing the book, then don’t. You can always go back and buy it in the future, if you feel like you need it.
I wanted to give you a small advice when it comes to this paper, and since I think it is quite important I gave it its own little section.
In fact, if you were drinking water, tea or anything for that matter, I would highly suggest keeping it as far away from your paper as possible. Also, you would want to be quite careful drinking that, too. Allow me to elaborate on that.
Another detail you should be careful with is how sensitive this paper actually is when it comes to tape.
You need to tape your tracing paper down to make sure you will only work on the face and won’t get makeup anywhere else on the paper. However, this paper is quite accident-prone when it comes to tape.
I have included close-ups for my accidents as well, so you can see what the potential damage could be. Of course, hair is an irrelevant part of a face chart to be ruined. However, I do feel like it is an important thing to be mentioned.
This has been quite a long ride!
In conclusion, would I recommend the Face Chart Template Workbooks by Liza Kondrevich? Absolutely!
I do believe you can get quite a lot of value out of these workbooks, and I also think they are well worth their price point.
The main benefits you could get out of these products are quite a few. Firstly, an immense amount of practice.
In fact, whether you want to do makeup only on yourself or want to make a career out of it, these books will definitely help you refine your art. Whether it comes down to blending or simply play around with shapes, you have the space to do that.
Moreover, these templates are perfect to test out looks beforehand, which is quite great if you feel nervous about pairing certain colors or using a certain design.
Another important benefit you may get out of practicing face charts is an improvement in your blending/makeup skills in general. I also believe that having literal blank sheets to work with will spark your creativity quite a bit!
Lastly, these workbooks are quite handy if you want to become a makeup artist and carry around your looks to show.
Now, what did I not really enjoy about these Face Chart Template Workbooks? How delicate the paper is, that’s for sure.
Being a clumsy person, I had a couple of accidents that ended up ruining my charts; moreover, taping the tracing paper down can damage the paper as well. You definitely want to be extra careful while working!
Besides this small issues, I have to admit that I would definitely re-purchase these workbooks.
They are an incredibly useful tool, and I find myself reaching for them quite often to either practice my skills or simply wind down after a long day.
They truly are worth their price, and I couldn’t recommend them more!
