This is the very first chapter of a new series I came up with, that I have decided to name The Glam Secrets Diaries! We are going to dive deep into present and past celebrities’ beauty routines and rituals, and see if we can replicate the same appeal and glamour in our daily lives as well.
For this first episode, we’re going to talk about the unforgettable Marilyn Monroe!
Chances are you have at least heard her name before, and know that she played a crucial part not only in the movie industry, but the whole of pop culture. And today, we’re going to talk about a few of her famous beauty rituals.
So, are you ready to explore 6 of Marilyn Monroe’s beauty secrets – and see if you can implement them in your daily life, too?
Let’s get started!
Born Norma Jean Mortenson, Marilyn Monroe was a famous North American actress, model and singer.
Famously known for her impeccable makeup looks and fashion sense, the Gemini star did not have the most fortunate upbringing. She rose to popularity by playing the comic roles of the “blonde bombshell”, and her stage presence could famously ‘tore a hole through the screen’.
She passed away in 1962, aged 36, under mysterious circumstances. The impact she has had on modern media is still very much present, and I am beyond glad her figure is having a much needed redemption arc in today’s views.
If you’d like to know more about her, I would wholeheartedly suggest watching this quick video. Mina Le raises some interesting points about Marilyn’s life, and just like one of her commenters pointed out:
“The more and more I learn about Marilyn the person, the more and more I love and appreciate her. It’s just so sad that she’s not even person anymore but a marble deity.”
Now, respectfully, let’s dive into some of Marilyn beauty practices!
The actress was very keen on hydration and looking glowy, and two of her favorite products for achieving that were Nivea Crème and, most notably, Vaseline. Marilyn loved a glowy base, which is why she always used these two items as makeup primers.
I have to say I can attest to the wonders of both of them, as I often use this trick in my own makeup routine!
The trick with Vaseline is to use quite a little, as it is much heavier than the original Nivea Crème and Nivea Soft (this latter happens to be a fave of mine). If you have extra dry skin, or just want your base to look extra dewy, you should definitely try out this trick!
We have just sang the wonders of Vaseline in the previous section, but there’s still something we haven’t touched on.
Apparently, Marilyn was a big fan of shiny lips (aren’t we all), and would always add a bit of Vaseline on top of her regular lipstick. This was kind of a trademark of her style, and whenever I think of Marilyn I always picture her with extra pouty, shiny lips!
For an extra kick, try to slightly warm up the Vaseline before applying it.
Just like us, Marilyn Monroe wasn’t a big fan of wash day when it came to her hair. Who has the time to continously keep it clean with regular and frequent washes, anyway?
Her commitment to not washing her hair so often brought her to use baby powder as dry shampoo. A trick that worked quite well for her, as her hair was a distinctive platinum blonde that would easily blend with the whiteness of the powder.
If you want to do the same, but your hair happens to be quite darker, try adding a spritz of water after you have massaged the powder into your scalp. It’ll get rid of the whiteness, while providing an even cleaner look to your hair!
One thing you might know about Marilyn is that she famously wore just 5 drops of Chanel N°5 before bed. It was one of her favorite fragrances, and one that has entered the Olympus of perfumes.
If you happen to have a bathtub, there’s a little trick that you just might fall in love with to enhance your perfume’s strength. In fact, if you add just a little tiny bit of your fragrance to your bath water, you’ll be surprised by how much stronger and more long-lasting the smell will be!
Make sure to add a tiny amount, though.
Now, this is something that I haven’t gotten around to try yet, but am super curious to do.
Apparently, Monroe would always use a dot of red eyeliner in her inner corner, as it would help brighten the white of her eyes.
Ok, I feel like this isn’t really anything new, but it’s still worth mentioning when it comes to makeup routines.
Marilyn would often cut her lashes in half, and only use the bigger, fluffier part on her outer corners. Nothing really ground-breaking, but still quite interesting to try out!
If you’re not really into false lashes, make sure to only wear mascara on your outer corners, or wear a different kind to deepen the outer part of your eyes.
