It’s been a hot minute since my last Revolution Skincare Haul, and like I promised here is another review of an item I purchase.
I decided to take a little bit more time with this product since not only it was something quite new to me, but also try it out as more of just a skincare supplement.
The Gold Elixir is marketed as the perfect oil to make your skin more hydrated and supple, but can also be mixed into your foundation. Is it actually as good as it seems?
Let’s find out!
You can find the full list of ingredients on revolutionbeauty.com.
The bottle comes in a golden mirror-like cardboard with black and white writings all over it.
One thing I deeply appreciate about this packaging is how practical it is. You have all the general specifics and ingredients on it, as well as directions on how to use the formula.
In my opinion, this cardboard has two big flaws; the first one being that it’s a bit big, and the second one being how quickly it gets dirty. It sure is cute to look at and to have sitting on your bathroom shelves, but it’s also quite impractical.
When talking about the bottle, I feel like we could say that it’s both a bit basic and quite aesthetically pleasing.
You have your regular pipette and your normal frosted glass bottle, nothing special here, but I have to admit that the gold sticker kind of elevates the aesthetic quality a bit. It perfectly mimicks the cardboard, and the writings pop perfectly on it.
The pipette is white and works pretty well, but the rose gold insert kind of clashes with the rest – at least in my opinion.
I mean, it doesn’t look bad, but it does not look completely cohesive either.
Fun Fact: this is my mom’s new go-to oil, and I am incline to believe that if you have dry skin you will find instant relief in this product.
The first thing you must keep in mind is that you are working with an oil. This means slippery, highly moisturizing, greasy texture. It may sound obvious, but I feel like I should point it out anyway.
Before applying the product, it will be best to shake the bottle fairly well. The glitter specks will blend with the formula more easily, giving the ‘radiance’ part of the product a true booster.
Even after the first application, I noticed that the oily formula seemed to be a bit more liquid and to run fairly quickly down my skin; the oil is the main component of the product, of course, but you can also detect a small percentage of water in it. This lightens the formula a bit, all the while preserving its moisturizing properties.
All in all, I would say the formula absorbs quite quickly (always considering we are working with an oil), and you literally need the smallest amount to cover your entire face completely. I would suggest maybe waiting a couple of minutes before applying your moisturizer; this will allow the formula to penetrate the skin and start working on its own.
Not all products and formulations pair well together, and that’s a fact. Adding specific face oils and serums to your foundation is nothing new, especially if you want to achieve the popular ‘glass skin’ effect.
Will this product pair well with a dewy (or, at least, not matte) foundation? Yes, of course. That’s kind of its purpose, to add some life. These two formulations were born to be together, and will work together effortelessly.
Now, the tricky part: how does this product pair with a matte foundation? Surprisingly, this combination will work as well! I was quite skeptical at first, and I have to admit that I expected to end up with a patchy mess on my face.
The first time I tried it, I decided to mix Focallure’s ‘Fluid Foundation’ (velvety-matte finish) and the oil directly on my face together. Overall, the finish wasn’t bad – but it was really, really shiny. The two formulations seem to blend together nicely, without leaving patchy stains or lifting in certain areas.
I decided to take a slightly different approach. I layed the oil down and massaged it into my skin, just like I would do if I was using it as a skincare supplement, and blended the foundation on top of it. The result was quite similar to what I had experienced the day before, but slightly less shiny.
Both times, after my face was set with translucent powder, I was still able to see a kind of glow that seemed to come from within. It wasn’t anything super strong or comparable to an actual highlighting routine, but the dewy finish was still present.
The effects lasted the whole day, and became more visible towards the end. This happened because I have combination to oily skin; of course, my own oil production mixed with the dewyness of the foundation, but since I set everything like I normally would have I was able to keep everything at bay.
Alright, here we are. All in all, would I recommend the Gold Elixir by Revolution Skincare? Absolutely!
Even if this product is clearly aimed at the more dry skin types out there, I feel like you could be able to enjoy its benefits if your complexion happens to lean towards the combo/oily side.
The first advice I would give you, if you don’t have oily skin, is to limit the usage of Gold Elixir to once per day, preferibly in the evening. Your skin will restore its lustre throughout the night, and a few drops of this oil will help you make your skin look plumper.
Another important detail you should consider about this product is that you need the smallest amount possible. A few drops (I usually go with 2) will easily do the trick, even if you have dry skin; however, feel free to customize the quantities according to your likings and needs.
You can’t really expect this Gold Elixir to sink immediately into the skin; the skin will absorb it quite quickly, considering its oily texture, but it won’t be as immediate as it would be with a regular water-based serum or moisturizer.
However, for this price I would 100% re-purchase it!
