Soph x Revolution “Extra Spice” Palette & Lipsticks Review + 3 Looks Demo

 

 

 

“Extra Spice” is the newest Soph x Revolution collaboration, created by the amazing British youtuber SophDoesNails (check her channel here!).

While her first eyeshadow selection was paired with a highlighter one, this time we have three beautiful nude lipsticks to try out. This palette was created to be sort of a complementary to their first one, which ended up being one of the best selling items on their site (check the review here).

Now, the real question is: how does this palette perform? Is the quality as good as its big sister? Is it worth it?

I did not purchase the lipstick shade “Fudge”, but I wanted to disclose that its marketed as a ‘chocolate brown nude’. Its general specifics are the same as the others, though.

PACKAGING

“Extra Spice” palette

One thing that I love about Revolution is that they actually care and listen to their costumers, and this palette is one of many proofs!

“Extra Spice” packaging theme is the same as the previous collab, rose gold and beige, but this time the colors are reversed. Soph and the palette’s names are beige, while the rest is a beautiful rose gold, mirror-like finish.

It does get dirty quite easily, but it’s so aesthetically pleasing to see!

 

Opening up the palette, we are greeted by a varied selection of both warm and cool shades and a stunning quality mirror.

The names of every shade are printed on the palette, which is something I deeply appreciate. Also, the fact that the company listened to the costumers is a huge deal for me!

I find the shade selection to be tasteful, too. Even if the warm craze is taking over and definitely all over the place, I feel like this palette decided to approach it a little bit differently.

You still get your warm browns, but the oranges and yellows are brighter and pop a lot more. There’s also an outstanding pop of red right in the middle.

Another feature that I also appreciate is the inclusion of a warm brown. The lack of it in the previous palette was kind of a downside to me.

 

Lipsticks – “Cake” and “Syrup”

I am hopelessly in love with these lipsticks’ packaging!

Beige and rose gold still take center stage, and the combination has never looked as beautiful. The rose gold lid balances the beige perfectly, and makes the printed designs pop even more.

The lipsticks are the same form as usual, but this time Soph’s name is engraved into the side. They don’t smell of anything, which is something people are not a fan of at times.

 

 

SHADES AND SWATCHES

“Extra Spice”

Per usual, we are going to break every shade down as we go, but I just wanted to take a moment to point out something.

This palette features four different formulations, as opposed to the previous one where we only played with two, but the differences don’t stop here. This new formula is much more buttery and soft, and makes the old one seem a rock when compared.

 

ROW #1

Everyday. Beautifully pigmented lilac shimmer. No fallout.

Running Late. I absolutely adore the matte formula in general, and this is one of my favorite shades out of this palette! Very well pressed, no cakeback.

Infinity. Dry or wet, this is one of the best performing shades out of the palette. The reflection it gives out when dry is gorgeous, but the foiled effect when wet is a whole other level.

Cheesecake. This matte chestnut brown will be your best friend this fall, believe me. The pigmentation is great, and the pressing even better!

Cookie Dough. I love this shade because it’s your perfect everyday transition, but has a little bit of cakeback.

Dream. Everybody needs a warm champagne/gold shimmer in their lives. Works better if wet.

 

ROW #2

Vitamin C. Spring and summer are the best seasons to experiment with this beautiful matte canary yellow. Great pigmentation, no cakeback.

Sweet n Sour. “Running Late” darker version is just as pigmented and performs equally well. No cakeback.

Twenty One. This matte cerise pink reminds me a lot of Juvia’s “Kogi” from their ‘Magic Palette‘ (check that review here!). No cakeback and beautiful pigment.

Romance. Your perfect summer and fall smokey shimmer. Not a trace of fallout and not crumbly!

Enchanted. A stunning wine purple that’s going to take your smokey eyes to the next level. It pair well with “Romance“, believe it or not!

Lakes. Matte dark olive green, beautifully pigmented. ‘Subculture‘ vibes, anyone?

 

ROW #3

Brownies. Matte deep brown, perfect if you don’t really feel like using a black shade – but still look for a nice depth. Nice pigmentation, no fallout.

Chocolate Orange. This matte sienna brown will be there for you when times get rough. Good press and good pigment.

Mulled Wine. Not only a great duo with “LA Sun“, but also a fun matte red violet for spring and summer (and also fall, why not?).

LA Sun. Bright gold shimmer, who doesn’t love it? Amazing pigment and no cakeback.

Aurora. Your fall khaki green shimmer, because we all need one! Works better if applied with fingers.

Reputation. This matte charcoal black is alright, although I did prefer “Nightmare” from the previous palette. A bit of fallout too, so apply with caution!

PALETTE DEMO #1 – Fire and Smoke

Since the palette does not have a color close to my skin tone, I set my eye primer with two different setting powders. Hey, want to know how to make your own eye primer? Click here!

I buffed “Cookie Dough” above my crease, followed by “Chocolate Orange” and “Cheesecake“, a little lower. Also, I packed “Brownies” on the outer part and blended it into the crease with the other shades.

The main colors I used on the lid are: “LA Sun“, “Dreams” and “Romance” (in that order). Lastly, I applied “Lakes” and “Aurora” on my lower lash line and “Everyday” on my inner corner.

 

PALETTE DEMO #2 – Your Basic Green Smokey Eye

On a set base, I quickly buffed “Cookie Dough” and “Chocolate Orange” into my crease, subsequently deepening them out with “Lakes“. After packing and blending “Reputation” on my outer corner, I applied “Aurora” on the rest of the lid with my finger.

I swiped “Dreams” and “LA Sun” on my lower lash line and finished with “Infinity” as my inner corner highlight.

 

PALETTE DEMO #3 – Colorful Extravaganza

I started off the look by buffing “Sweet n Sour” and “Running Late” into the crease, and blending them out using “Vitamin C“. To deepen everything up, I place a tiny bit of “Twenty One” all over and the littlest amount of “Brownies” on the outer part.

I proceeded to do a classical cut crease and filled it up with “Everyday“, “LA Sun” and “Dreams” (in this order). Then, I cut the lid diagonally to ‘erase’ the outer part; wetting my brush, I used “Infinity” to create a liner effect.

 

 

LIPSTICKS

In all honesty, they were the real surprise of this collection. I did like the shades right off the bat, but did not expect them to perform this good.

The creamy finish is super comfortable to wear, and the pigmentation will blow you away. Blotting them out to create the perfect matte finish won’t take anything away from them – you literally need one swipe!

Initially, I did not think they were going to last long, but a wear test immediately proved me wrong! Sure, they are not liquid lipsticks, but they put up quite the fight might I say.

I really hope Revolution considers using this formula for all their future lipsticks!

 

 

PALETTE COMPARISON

I wanted to keep the comparison before my final conclusions to actually see how this palette performs.

Starting with the packaging, I like the idea of keeping a main theme and switching it up a bit. The complementary vibe it gives really pays off when judging the aesthetic of the palette.

I also appreciate the fact that the shade names are on the palette rather than the clear plastic sheet. Personally, I find it to be a cleaner and more luxurious touch.

 

 

                 

You do get less shades than the previous palette, 6 to be exact. It would bother me if the selection was catered to a particular tone (only warm or cool, for example), but I have to say I don’t really mind it. Much like its big sister, in fact, “Extra Spice” can be easily worn throughout the year, no matter what season.

As a matter of fact, I found some shades to be sort of a “remastered” version of a few previous ones; specifically, “Running Late”, “Romance” and “Aurora”.

“Running Late” is a matte warmer version of “Cloudberry”, while “Romance” is “Festive Flame” but much more red. Lastly, “Aurora” is the perfect ‘goth’ sister of “Pine Tree”. I inserted a couple of swatches so you can see what I mean.

The new formulations applied to this palette are equally important.

While the first Soph x Revolution collab only featured mattes and shimmers, “Extra Spice” gave us a duochrome and a metallic finish, too, but that’s not it.

I loved the first palette, but I have to say that the formulas of these shadows are much better. Not only in terms of pigmentation, but also softness and blendability. The shimmers feel just as good as Juvia’s “Magic Palette”, and the mattes are even more buttery!

 

 

FINAL THOUGHTS

This has been a long one! Let’s talk about the lipsticks first, then we’ll switch to the palette.

I have to admit, I did not expect this much quality out of these lipsticks. I own a couple from previous collections by Revolution (“The One“, that has been discontinued, and “Chauffeur“), and although they are not ‘bad’ I must say they do not feel as luxiourious as these ones.

This new formula is comfortable and long lasting, and extremely pigmented too! You only need one swipe to cover your lips, and can easily be blotted to create the perfect matte finish without taking anything away from the pigmentation.

I most definitely recommend checking them out!

 

Now, the main event: the palette.

I have always liked Revolution’s eyeshadow palettes’ quality, but this one is definitely one step above.

Not only you have four different formulas to play around with, but the general formulation of every single shadow – whether it is matte or shimmer or whatever – is an absolute pleasure to work with. The mattes are extremely buttery and blendable, and the shimmers (including “Everyday” and “Infinity“) are nicely pigmented and pressed.

I only had a couple of ‘issues’ with “Cookie Dough“, “Reputation” and “Aurora“; the first two shades being a bit powdery, while the last one a little less pigmented than the others. Things that can easily be fixed by a cautious hand and a wet brush, though!

In light of everything I experienced and saw, I definitely recommend this palette. The quality is unreal, the color scheme well thought out and the price point is a literal dream!
